One of my newest favorite emcees and oldest friends, Gknowbyrd (aka Eugenio Davis) has finally begun gaining the recognition he deserves, creating momentum and putting out enough bars to lock away an opponent’s career for life. Growing up together under the gravity of welfare and warfare that comes with poverty, he taught me that even with the world on your shoulders—you can still reach for the stars. Privileged to meet his family (and be treated as family), there’s no doubt that loyalty and strength are a family trait: bonds tighter than D.N.A. that couldn’t be broken by an eight ball, bullet, or anything else that came with the streets we grew up in. Raised in a city of silhouettes, Gknowbyrd has faced his shadows, experiencing the full spectrum of existence; the substance that he would later express through his music. No stranger to the struggle, he’s experienced the loss of everything from a homes to close homies, but never his homage to life—loving it to death. Even at his lowest points, he only gained new perspectives, and a deep perspective on what truly matters, things higher than himself: faith, hope and love. Some listen to Hip-Hop, and some live it
Gknowbyrd lives it, and always has. Falling in love with it at a young age, he’s rode the beat through the lows and highs, being able to relate to music in many aspects. This passion lead him to learn everything he could about the genre, from its roots to what it’s branched out into today; and he’s grown from it all, catching the guiding light of the music’s spirit rather than just throwing shade. Don’t be mistaken, he’s harder than the rock bottom concrete that he grew out to get where he is today, but for those who can read between the lines, he’s more than just another emcee. Whether it was free-styling over a beat-box, battling over a crowd at a party, or pouring out song lyrics over a beer, it was heartfelt and Hip Hop. With the lyricism of a reverend and the flow of a revolutionary, his music demands respect. want to find yourself on a set of tracks hotter than the ones in the south side that he’s from with the freight train coming towards you stay on his good side. Truth is, he’s already blessed, and he thanks God for the beautiful life that He’s given him.
